Work begins on restoring Cathedral Lychgate

Between Monday 9th October and Friday 10th November the Cathedral lychgate will be closed while essential repairs and restoration are undertaken.

The work is being carried out by local builders, Jones & Fraser, who have previously worked on the roofs of the Cathedral and know the building well. The scope of the work will also include a programme of training others in the heritage skills of stone tiling, a skill being lost to the industry. The aim is that this will be a pilot scheme in advance of the major Cathedral restoration project that is coming. There are plans for a visit by a group of NVQ3 Heritage Carpentry learners from the Twyi Centre, Llandeilo (which promotes the care and repair of heritage buildings) once work has begun. An Open Day will be held on Saturday 28 th October to which everyone is welcome so do come along to find out more about what’s happening. All of the other gates to the Cathedral grounds will remain open throughout the works and so access will not be affected.
